This is the story one little family
making its way from the
salty shores of New England
to the suburbs of Chicago.
It won't always be easy,
but as long as we're together,
we'll find a way to bloom where we're planted.

WDW7....the end!

They say that all good things must come to an end,
and that was true for our vacation to Disney World too.
Before we knew it, the marathon was over and our last morning had dawned.

It was time to say goodbye to our room...

Goodbye to the lagoon.

Goodbye to the pool we didn't get to spend nearly enough time in!

And goodbye to one LAST character breakfast!

Goodbye silly posed pictures that we paid an arm and a leg for,
and that annoyed all the boys to pieces!

Goodbye Donald!

Goodbye Goofy!

Goodbye Mickey!

Goodbye Minnie!

Goodbye breakfasts that Mommy didn't have to cook!

Goodbye mouse-ear shaped everything!

Goodbye cars we didn't have to drive!

Goodbye Nana, Papa, Nannie and Grey!

...and this was about where the crying started.
(insert frowney face)

No one warns you about "post-Disney letdown syndrome"
It's pretty awful.
Couple it with "post-grandparent letdown syndrome"
and you've got some pretty miserable kiddos on your hands.

We left Disney on a Wednesday.
The crying had pretty much stopped by Saturday,
though there were still aftershocks for a week or more.

For the kids,
this vacation will go down in history as
THE BEST VACATION EVER!!!!

For Marc and I,
this vacation will go down as
the Mickey-Marathon that didn't end.

Disney is something you have to do.  Childhood wouldn't be complete without it!
But we learned the hard way that there is simply SO MUCH to do at WDW,
that even with factoring in only the very basics, you will still be
totally exhausted and overwhelmed every second of every day.
And so will your children.

Would we do it again?
I sure am glad we have a built in excuse to hold that off for the next few years.
By the time we are out of diapers again....I might be recovered enough to do it again.

In the meantime, staying up all night, snuggling a newborn in a rocking chair is looking mighty relaxing in comparison!

BOO!

We interrupt your regularly scheduled installment of the Mallett's Walt Disney World Saga to bring you breaking news of super-cute costume-clad kids!!

Molly the Pheonix, Jack as Pre Viszla, Cameron the MooCow, and Ben the Ghostbuster.

 Yesterday was Halloween!
A day the kids LOVE and parents DREAD.  Or is that just me?

I didn't make these, but I'm bragging about them anyway.
Auntie Ulia is quite the gourmet cook, and spoils us rotten. We were lucky little pumpkins this year!

This year was challenging because Trick or Treating usually begins by 5pm in our neighborhood, but the kids don't get off the school bus until 4pm.  It was a mad rush to get everyone home, into their costumes, have a quick visit with our adorable cousin Cameron, welcome Marc home, have dinner hot, ready and brought to the neighbors' for pre-game festivities, and begin trick or treating in an orderly fashion.

What does a cow say Cameron?
MOOOOOOOOOOOO!

The fact that any pictures were taken at ALL, was a near miracle.
The fact that we ended the night with all three children accounted for was a complete miracle!

Why is it that every year I forget to set ground rules so that my children will not run off in different directions at warp speed, causing their parents incredible anxiety? Molly will gladly walk from one house to another in an orderly fashion, and at a normal pace. Ben and Jack run screaming down the middle of the street, zigzagging from house to house, the older brother trying to elude the younger with the tactics of a well-trained secret agent

Marc chased the boys, while I stuck with Molly.  Before we had gone 15 houses, Marc had doubled back carrying a hysterically crying Ben, who had gotten ditched by the big boys and was heartbroken and indignant, especially since he considers himself an honorary 10 year old.

Meera, Sela and Molly.

Vince and GiGi

Brody and Miss Kris.
(remember the Kara Vita testimonial?  That's her!  Could she stop looking 15 already?  It's prematurely aging ME!)

Sela is the ying to Molly's yang.  Here she is doing the happy lollipop dance.
Our Pheonix so perfectly matched this tree!  She was so sweet to let me snap a picture between houses,

Molly, Kayden and Avery teamed up with their IDOL, Alexa, the gorgeous 17 year old from down the street.
They were in HEAVEN!

Ben finally stopped crying long enough to take care of a few neighborhood ghosts.

What a sunset!  Love the way Ms. Pheonix lights up in the distance!

Did I mention it was fr-fr-freezing???  I had to break down and buy a winter coat that morning.
One that would fit the round belly I'm sporting.

We crossed paths ONCE with Jack all night.  He tore off with a group of his buddies and one set of parents (that we trust implicitly - they're much stricter than we are!).

Jack "D", Ben's buddy from across the street.

This was the spookiest house on the block - I'm surprised Molly went up there!
Not Ben though...he ain't afraid of no ghosts!
Once the sun went down and our buckets were filled, that was pretty much it for us.
We were home by 7:30, Skyping with Nana and Papa, stuffing our faces with candy.

Mommy needs to remember that this year, both Molly and Ben squashed their old habit of crashing into bed happily after a candy bar or two.  This year, they stuffed their faces until they were no longer capable of speaking English, then fussed and argued and whined until they finally passed out long past bedtime.

Next year, we may have to change tactics!

This year though, the kids would all say Halloween was a fabulous success!

**NOTE TO SELF and PARENTS EVERYWHERE**
The nice lady who sits next to me at Ben's swimming lessons told me about the "Sugar Fairy".
Every Halloween, the Sugar Fairy visits all the good boys and girls who leave their excess candy out for her to take with her.  In exhange, she leaves them a special treat!  Some years it's a movie and popcorn, other years a small toy they've been pining for.  But she leaves happiness wherever she goes, especially Moms and Dads who don't have to arm wrestle children over their candy the next day!!

I need to find a way to get the Sugar Fairy to come to my house!!

WDW6

Day six was going to be our 'unscheduled' day, so that we could go and revisit whatever we'd missed, or liked enough to return to.  The Magic Kingdom was first on the list!  Marc and the boys wanted to go ride Thunder Mountain and Splash Mountain, and Molly and I wanted to shop, take pictures and meet more characters!

I have to say, it was rather fortuitous that the kids interests and our own personal interests dovetailed so nicely.  For example, the boys looked at me like I was off my rocker when I asked them to climb the stairs to the train station for a picture overlooking the park.  Molly on the other hand, wanted to pose for twelve of them!

It amazed me that this is what is considered "not crowded" at Disney World.
Look at all those people!

We didn't have to walk far before we found our first character to meet.
Marie from the Aristocats was giving autographs and taking pictures right in the island at the top of Main Street.

And the Disney photographers had a setup right behind her where you could get your picture taken with Cinderella's Castle right behind you.

Molly wanted to walk around behind the castle to see if we could find a way inside.  On the way there we stumbled upon something SUPER exciting!  Merida, Disney's newest princess was having a meet and greet!  They had it set up so nicely, in her own special area, with coloring sheets for the kids, and even an archery lesson while we waited.

I couldn't get this picture from the angle I was at in line, but the Disney Photographer did.
Molly NAILED the target - hers was the only arrow that stuck in the whole group of archer wannabes.

Merida was so lovely and sweet.
In fact, all the princesses are experts at making their loyal subjects feel welcome.

Later we were able to get inside a small portion of Cinderella's castle.
It had the most elaborate and gorgeous mosaics on the wall.

The mosaics told Cinderella's story.  Molly loved them!

The castle was so pretty from this side, and much less crowded!

Then the shopping began!  We ended up not buying a single thing, but boy did we have fun looking!
Molly wanted me to take a picture of all the hats and ears she tried on all over the park.
She's a girl after my own heart, that's for sure!!

We checked out the sword in the stone

before riding the carousel one last time.

And then we got an important phone call!
The boys were in Frontierland, and they'd found out that Jasmine and Aladdin were going to start meeting people any minute.  Jasmine is Molly's FAVORITE princess at the moment, and we thought we had to go to Epcot to meet her (which we didn't really have time for).
 So this news was tremendous!

We rushed right over and the boys were holding our place in line.
(sweethearts they are!)

Molly and Aladdin struck it off immediately.

And Ben and Jasmine were total buds.

What a dream come true!!

The boys showed us some of their favorite spots in Fontierland.
The gun shop was tops in their minds.

On the way out of the park, we caught yet another irresistable view of the castle.

And yet another crane!

In true Magic Kingdom fashion,
there was a parade to see us out.

Goodbye, Magic Kingdom!!
We'll miss you!

It was nearly time for our lunch reservations over at Hollywood Studios,
and it turns out the only way to get there from the Magic Kingdom was to take a ferry or monorail, and then switch to a bus or taxi.  Since we didn't have two weeks to get there, we opted for the ferry and a cab.

*** Note to self, never try and park hop when Hollywood Studios or Downtown Disney is involved! ***

We eventually arrived at our destination - the Sci Fi Diner!

And all our favorite people were there to meet us!

The diner was cool, because instead of a table and chairs, you get a car!
And you get to watch old Godzilla-type movie promos and cartoons.

The ambiance was cool, but the food was pretty gross.
So was having to explain the 1950s B-level horror genre to a freaked out 7 and 4 year old.
But it was an interesting meal, and the big kids and the grownups enjoyed it,
some of the grownups even remembered the movies that were being promo-ed!

Jack and Ben had already picked out their favorite place to return to from the prior trip Marc had taken with them.  It was the store!  They wanted to make their own lightsabers from the make-your-own-lightsaber bar.   It was a pretty cool proposition!

I have no idea what happened to steps 5, 6 &7...

By the end of this, Ben and I were melting down....literally.  It was the hottest day of the trip and we were WIPED.

It was too bad for us though, because we had a big event to see - the stunt show!

First, we got to wait in line with 1000 other hot and sweaty people for 30 minutes.

Then we got to drag ourselves up 40 flights of bleachers.

Then, we got to watch the show.

Marc and Jack loved it!  And it was pretty cool with all the explosions and stuntwork and even an appearance by Lightning McQueen.  But for the rest of us, I'd say we could have missed it and not minded.

Jack and Marc decided to stay on at Hollywood Studios and the rest of us took our sweaty, exhausted, famished selves home.  Nannie and Gray drove us back to our hotel (which was awesome because otherwise I would have just laid down on the pavement and prayed for a fairy godmother to come with a pumpkin coach).  As payment, Gray got to enjoy a frosty beverage at the appetizer bar of our hotel, and Nannie got a makeover at Salon BenMolly.

Pink toes...

Blue fingernails...

and even a shoulder massage!  It was the perfect ending to a long day!
