This is the story one little family
making its way from the
salty shores of New England
to the suburbs of Chicago.
It won't always be easy,
but as long as we're together,
we'll find a way to bloom where we're planted.

Cape Cod 2011 - Look Off Cottage

So back to VACATION!!  After a week at Nana's house, we headed over the Bourne Bridge for a week Capeside!  We landed the deal of the century off of Homeaway.com and stayed in old Captain's house in Monument Beach, which is a part of Bourne on Buzzards Bay.

The upper cape is close enough to our family and friends and the outer edge on Buzzards Bay is some of the calmest, warmest water you will find on Cape Cod.  Perfect for the kiddos!

The house was AMAZING!!  Totally Cape Cod - OLD Cape Cod, and with so many nooks and crannies that you hardly noticed we had up to 40 visitors at a time.  It was the perfect combinaiton of everything we needed.  It was well maintained and had the amenities we needed, yet also boasted the character and charm I was craving after a year in a midwest McMansion.

But enough words, how about a house tour?!

Meet "Look-Off Cottage"
as she looked long ago

And here she is in 2011...

The front porch was a dream come true, with it's beamed ceilings and view of the harbor.

The front door is there, but it's been stuck shut for half a century, so to enter we used the back door via the back porch.  Again with the painted beadboard ceiling.  LOVE!

The back porch leads in to the sunroom, which we mainly used for dumping beach gear and shoes
(40 people= a lot of flip flops!)

(Ceiling.  Again.  Love!)

One step up from the sunroom was the door to the kitchen, which was huge and pretty modern, and which housed the kids' favorite part of the entire house...the electric piano!!

There was a breakfast bar for two, an eat-in table for six, and a back stairway leading upstairs (that's what I'm standing on - a hundred years ago this would have been the servant's stairs)

Up the stairs you'll find yourself facing Jack's bedroom.

It was so charming with it's painted antique furniture and quilts aplenty that I wished I could have taken it home with me!  The lady of this house is CRAFTY let me tell you.  That giant bolster that Teddy is sitting on is a total DIY job, and yes, that is a starfish sewn to the end.  What detail!

Jack picked this room because it had the only upstairs TV and the IMac.  He's no dummy!  It also had a trundle bed for cousins!

Diagonally across from Jack's room was the laundry room, and thank goodness for that because we must have gone through 30 towels a day!

The owner had antique washboards hung on the walls - clearly she is a collector of vintage treasures.

Keep walking down the hall and it takes a sharp right turn.

That's a window into the master bathroom on the left.  When you take the corner, you'll find the door.

There were vintage finds and pillows every where you turned!

Now on to the spa-tastic master bath...

I did manage a relaxing bath or two, but mostly the soaking tub was used to hose children off two at a time, from all the sand they brought back from the beach!

Next to the master was Ben's room.  It was the turret you see in the facade pictures of the house.  His favorite part was that the closet was chock full of the owner's grown son's old toys.  And he was a GI Joe and Star Wars fantatic.  Score!

Across the hall from Ben's room was Molly's room.  Pinkalicious is the key word here.

Crackle-painted bed from heaven, plus a rug I would have rolled up and taken home with me if I didn't think they'd notice.  Is that the perfect shade of pink or what?!  And the bed had a trundle, so she could have sleepovers with her cousins like she always wished for.

At the end of the hallway you come to the front stairs...

With a full bath on the landing.  It reminded me of the Greek Isles with its crisp blue and white.

At the bottom of the stairs, the front door is in front of you and on the right is a bank of window seats overlooking the porch and wrapping around to the kitchen and a full bath.

On the left is the living room

Full of slipcovers and pillows and books, books, BOOKS!!

Walk through the living room and you are led to the dining room

That french door leads back to the kitchen, and on your right is a door leading to the TV room.

Which had it's own full bath.

I'm exhausted from all this touring!!!  But we must push on, because amazingly, there is still MORE.  In the tour upstairs I forgot to mention that just to the right of Molly's bedroom is a door that leads to the third floor.  And it's not just any attic mind you.

This is looking down from the top, over a banister that has not one single balluster the same.  Somebody back in time was a woodworker with creativity!

While Ben and Molly play a game on my iPhone, take a look above them at the telltale golden spines of five DECADES of National Geographic.

Talk about rainy day HEAVEN!!

Here are some of the pages from the oldest ones...

Can you stand it!!?

If you look beyond the other side of the stairwell, you'll find even more to love.

Two attic bedrooms...

The first one has yet another full bath attached, with a cute mini tub and mini pedestal sink.

On the other side of those stained glass windows is the attic living room

With a loveseat, hide-a-bed and a view that is second to none!  Well except maybe for the last room on our house tour....the telescope room!!!  Because of course, no self-respecting sea captain could be without a telescope room!

Tomorrow, I'll show you what he's looking at, but for today, here are a few of the details we grew to love during our stay...

Look-Off Cottage was amazing with all her charms - everyone who crossed her threshold fell in love.
And amazingly, with all those beds and all those baths, there were a few nights when we broke capacity and had to sleep guests on couches.

Except for maybe adding a few days of R&R at the end to recover from all the fun,
I don't think we'd change a thing!

RECIPE: Turkey Pumpkin Chili

I know I'm still in the thick of summer vacation with my blog posts, but with the weather getting cooler it's the perfect time to start cooking all our favorite yummy fall foods!  I even busted out my crockpot today :)

Here's one of my best, tried and true, always a hit, easy peasy (just a lot of ingredients) cold weather favorites.  Courtesy of my awesome friend Lyn, to whom I owe a debt of gratitude because this is one mother of a recipe and I plan to be known for it when I'm an old lady and everyone wants "Nana Mallett's Chili"!!

Turkey Pumpkin Chili
Terrific chili for a chilly autumn day...or any day really!

1 lb lean ground turkey

¾ cup chopped onions
½ cup chopped green bell peppers
2 cloves garlic, minced
Two 14.5oz. cans diced tomatoes, with liquid
15 oz can pure pumpkin puree
15 oz can kidney beans, with liquid
15 oz can Great Northern beans, with liquid
15 oz can tomato sauce
4 oz can diced green chilies
2 tsp ground chili powder
1
½ tsp ground cumin (or more to taste)
1 tsp salt

½ tsp ground black pepper
1
½ tsp oregano
½ cup water

Brown meat in a large skillet, drain fat and add to a large pot. Wipe out skillet and sautee
onion, bell pepper and garlic until tender. Add to pot with browned turkey. Add all remaining ingredients and stir to combine. Simmer 30 minutes to 1 hour. If chili is too thick, add more water, and adjust seasonings as needed.

Serve with baked tortilla chips, low fat sour cream, sliced green onions and reduced fat cheddar cheese for sprinkling on top!

Two of our favorite things...

Any time you asked the kids, particularly Molly and Ben, what their favorite part of our vacation was,
they usually answered the same...

MILLI AND CLYDE!!!!

And really, who can blame them?

This is Clyde.

He oozes personality.  He is really good at listening and posing for pictures.
Particularly if you have a cookie in your hand.
If you have a cookie in your hand?  He will practically recite the ABC's backward in Swahili.

He knows lots of tricks, and loves to show off.
He does not love to snuggle.
He's got things to do, and sniff, and see.

This is Milli.  She has her own special tricks.

She listens to the beat of her own drummer.

She's all about the snuggling.

This is Milli and Clyde's fan club president.

She is also very cute.

A good listener.

and marches to her own drummer.

She's a good friend too.
She misses her furcousins.

Nana's House

Don't ask me how I don't have more pictures of the first days of our vacation...I guess we were busy, vacationing?  I know the first few days after such a long journey were pure HEAVEN!  I even managed to finish a book!  A real one!  For PLEASURE!!!

The kids took about five seconds to stretch out, and it was like they'd never left.  They settled into Nana and Papa's house like we still lived just down the road.  The 'good' snacks were in the jelly cabinet, just like always.  The fridge was full of juice and waffles and sausages, just like we love.  The beds were soft and cozy, and the cushy pool towels piled high.

It doesn't get much better, particularly when you add in some of our favorite people in the whole wide world :)

We might not have loads of pictures of our days at Nana's house, but we've got the memories tucked in our hearts, which is even better!

Jammin' Berry Farm

It's an annual tradition in our house, since Jack was about three, to go pick blueberries at the Jammin' Berry Farm at the end of Old Washington Street in Pembroke.  And it just so happened that we were visiting during PRIME bluberry season!

The blueberry "farm" is really just someone's house, who has a bunch of blueberry bushes - I think he's probably a former hippie, what with the name "Jammin" and all, but his berries are the best.  Turns out they opened the very day we went to pick and I have never in all our years seen a bigger, better crop!

All the kids had a fabulous time, except for dear Ben.  He was excited to feed the koi in the pond, and proceeded to dump all his fish food in the lake in one fell swoop.  Then he was ready to go home.  And he made sure we knew it every second of the rest of the morning.  Whining, falling down, refusing to wear his shoes, hanging off of my body, pulling my clothes....you know the drill.

But in spite of his protests, we got our blueberries and got to share one of our favorite places with our friends.

From Left:
Sarah, Jack M., Molly, Ben, Jack L., and Joseph (aka Jojo)

Do you like the picture above?  I'm practicing dodging and burning
I think this has been that je ne sais quois I've loved in other people's photographs but have
never been able to replicate in my own.

Don't sit under the apple tree, with anyone else but me...

See you next year!  Same berry time, same berry place!!

Barbecue on Lilah Lane

When we left MA for our Illinois adventure, I was hopeful that we'd be able to keep our friendships strong, despite the distance.  In some cases, that hasn't panned out.  And that's okay.  Some friendships are long lasting, and some for a season.  Both can be wonderful when you focus on the positive.

Coming back, I was struck by the love we are blessed with, from the friends that did keep us in their hearts and went out of their way to visit with us while we were in Massachusetts.

Molly's best friend Sarah from preschool came with an added side benefit - her awesome mom Meg, who put together the most wonderful evening for us to reconnect.  Filled with fun for the kids, and some of our favorite people from our life in Pembroke.  It was truly like 'coming home' again.  So much so that Molly asked if we could go sleep at our old house for the night and pretend we still lived there.  I;d be lying if I said it didnt' break my heart - but I reminded her, and Jack, and myself, how fortunate we are to have the best of both worlds...our lives in Illinois, and a group of wonderful friends in MA who made us feel so special.

Don't ask me how I didn't get a picture of Meg, Lisa, Kim and I - I blame it on the margaritas!

This is Chuck - you can tell he hates to have a good time ;o)
(his margaritas are rivaled only by his BBQ ribs!!  Yum OH!)

Molly, Sarah and Bella having fun in the pool.  The Leaches even have a SLIDE in their pool !
(this is also one of the reasons Ben stayed behind at Nana's house...
Mommy needed a margarita, not a heart attack, lol!)

I just love how much fun Molly was having - she was full of smiles all night.

Jack put on a Magic show for everyone with the new kit Auntie Trecie bought him.

I still can't believe they went to all this trouble for us!

Clockwise from top
Emily Kane, Katie O'Brien, Sarah Leach, Molly, Bella Kane

All but Sarah are from Edgewater Drive - when we moved in, Katie and Emily were 1, and Bella, Molly and Sarah were just twinkles in their mothers' eyes.  It was such a wonderful thing to watch them grow up, and even better to come back a year later and see that they are still as beautiful on the inside as they all are on the outside.  I have pictures of Katie walking Ben up and down the sidewalk in his push-car.  And of Sarah and Molly turning every event into a dress-up opportunity.  And of Emily and Bella doing just about everything with my kids at one time or another.

We're so lucky to still count them among our favorite people!

You're probably wondering why I haven't posted our vacation yet?

I have an excellent, and incredibly adorable reason.

Her name is
Fiona

and she is my best friend's new niece.

Fiona had impeccable timing and was born while we were on vacation

And I got to take her pictures!

She was just

FIVE

DAYS

OLD.

Fresh from heaven and 100% precious!

I love my (pretend) job!

And friends who let me use them for practice
(thanks Kate and Dave!)

And really cute dogs named Fenway
(who is lucky I didn't put him in my camera bag and take him home)

And sweet Morgan, who was not at all comfortable with a stranger in the house,
but smiled for me anyway.

But probably what I like most
are five day old babies

Who SMILE!

Being that it is my "pretend" job, I'm not that fast at the postprocessing that most pros do in a snap.
Plus there's those three babies of my own that are all needy and such.
So it took me these last two weeks to get Fiona's images all perfect and polished and shipped off to her proud Mommy and Daddy, and now I can concentrate on fully documenting the fun that was

MALLETT SUMMER ROAD TRIP 2011!!

(coming soon to a blog near you)
