Our Edgewater Drive neighbors, the Kanes, had a habit of taking their girls on "mystery rides" for fun. I always loved the idea, but was never able to pull it off with our nosey nellies...until now! I've been on a mission to find the best foliage Illinois has to offer, so we booked two nights at a resort near Starved Rock State Park, in Utica, IL. It's about 80 minutes west/soutwest of us, and this was their "Fall Color Weekend". We stayed at Grizzly Jack's Grand Bear Resort (no joke on the name) and it was pretty much HEAVEN for kids. With an indoor water park, sweet shop, indoor arcade/carnival, 18 hold mini-golf, and a train that rides around the property all day long...well, it made up for the fact that there wasn't much COLOR to the foliage!
We did find a few pops of color that rivaled New England, but everything seemed either past peak (as in brown and on the ground) or not yet turned (as in green and still on the trees). It was still fun to get out and see a different part of our very FLAT state - we even went uphill, for the first time since we'd moved here!

Did you try any pumpkin pretzels? You could park me right at that sweet shop any day! It really looks like a great place for a family adventure!!
I took a picture of them, Mel, because the blasted things were manufactured in a facility that also processes tree nuts, so on account of Ben's allergy, we couldn't buy them! Bane of my existence that phrase. :( It's on all the good stuff!
